UC Merced 5200 Lake Road

May 7, 6:00pm

Hosted by UC Merced’s Executive Chef Mitchell Vanagten, the Food for Thought series brings writers, artists, and cultural thinkers to the Central Valley for free and accessible events for students and the broader community. Featuring Chef Vanagten’s special menus, these have become beloved events for the region. Jeff’s appearance follows Shannon Lee’s last spring!

A proud University of California alum, Jeff studied at both UC Berkeley and UCLA, bringing a deep California connection to his work and storytelling.

Author of the groundbreaking Can’t Stop Won’t Stop and the acclaimed Water Mirror Echo: Bruce Lee and the Making of Asian America, Jeff’s work has helped shape national conversations on identity, storytelling, and culture.

Join us as we explore the legacy of Bruce Lee and the power of narrative, followed by a thoughtfully curated networking reception prepare by the UC Merced Dining team inspired by the evening’s themes. One of Bruce Lee’s favorite dishes (Oyster Sauce Beef) will be featured along with recipes by our Merced friend Chef Tu David Phu.

Moderated by Jeff’s old classmate, Bayani (Jol) Manilay.

It will be a night to remember!
